Finding Your Fit (5)
Every body is different, and menstrual cup fit is unique for everyone. We’ve worked with gynaecologists, pelvic health experts, and members of the Emm community to design a cup that suits a wide range of people. Currently, the product comes in one size. You can explore our product page sizing guide to learn more.
We know finding the right menstrual product can be a challenge. That’s why every early access pre-order comes with a free Fit–Check Kit, a non-smart version of our Emm cup so you can try it first. Here’s how it works:
1. You’ll receive your Emm Smart Cup plus a separate Fit–Check Kit.
2. The Fit–Check Cup looks and feels just like Emm’s Smart Cup — same shape, size, and medical-grade silicone — but without the smart technology.
3. Use the Fit–Check Cup first, with the included applicator, to try out inserting the cup, understand if it is comfortable for you and reliable if you wear it on your period.
4. If it works for you, you can open your Smart Cup and start using it.
5. If it isn’t a match, simply return the used Fit-Check Kit and unopened Smart Cup with the tamper seal intact within 28 days for a full refund. If the cup doesn’t work for you, we’d love to hear why so we can make a product that does in the future.
Emm has been designed with comfort in mind and has been refined with feedback from our community of testers.
86% of our users rated the Emm cup as ‘comfortable’ or ‘extremely comfortable’ - with some even saying it’s the most comfortable cup they’ve ever used!
If you’ve recently given birth (within the last six weeks), we recommend checking with your healthcare provider before using Emm or any other internal menstrual product.
If you have a pelvic condition, we suggest speaking with your healthcare provider for personalised advice before using Emm's products.
Using Emm (6)
Every Emm Smart Cup comes with full instructions in the packaging, plus step-by-step guidance in the app. We’ll guide you through everything, from insertion and removal to cleaning, so you feel supported from the start.
You can wear the Emm Smart Cup overnight for up to 12 hours. Depending on your flow, you may have to change it more frequently. For best reliability, we recommend emptying and cleaning before bed and again in the morning.
Up to 12 hours at a time, day or night, dependent on your flow. Emptying and cleaning regularly keeps you comfortable and minimises leaks.
Both the Smart Cup and Applicator are fully waterproof and made from body-safe materials. For more detail on the safety testing the product will undergo, see the Product Safety section below.
Emm's product is compatible with:
- Android: Compatible from Android 12 (SDK 31) up to the latest version
- iOS: Compatible from iOS 15.1 up to the latest version
The Smart Cup uses a lithium-ion battery. On average, it needs charging every 5–6 days while used on period, with a full charge taking around 4-8 hours. Charging is simple and discreet, just place the cup in its dedicated charging case and connect via USB-C.
Product Safety (4)
Emm is UKCA-marked, which confirms it has passed rigorous safety and performance testing. Safety has been at the heart of Emm from day one. Our product has been developed by engineers, scientists, and period specialists, and tested in accredited labs to international medical device standards, including those set by the MHRA (UK), FDA (US), and EU regulators.
The parts that interact with the body:
- Smart Cup: Made from medical-grade silicone — body-safe, latex-free, fully waterproof, with no boiling required for cleaning.
- Applicator: Made from ABS plastic — durable and smooth for comfortable insertion.
Both of these parts are required to pass independent safety tests, including the ISO 10993 series for biocompatibility.
The parts that do not interact with the body:
- Charging case: Made from ABS plastic for durability.
Emm uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to transfer data from your cup to the app. Bluetooth is only activated when the cup is on charge and in the charging case - never when it is inside your body. While BLE is considered safe for in-body use, our research showed that users preferred it to be switched off during wear. We made this a conscious design decision to give you extra peace of mind.
The Smart Cup contains three types of sensors:
1. Capacitive biosensors (measure flow volume and rate)
2. Accelerometer (detects movement and tilt)
3. Temperature sensors (confirm in-body status)
All sensors are fully sealed within the silicone, so they never touch your body. This design keeps them safe, hygienic, and protected throughout the lifetime of the cup.
We’ve also carefully selected medical-grade silicone for its softness, flexibility, and tear-resistant durability. It maintains its shape and performance over repeated use while staying safe and comfortable.
To validate safety, the Smart Cup is tested to international medical device standards, including IEC 60601-1 – General requirements for basic safety and performance. As part of this, it undergoes:
- Drop testing – to confirm durability in everyday use
- IPX7 water resistance testing – protection against immersion in water up to 1 metre
- Robustness testing – to confirm the silicone stays intact and reliable over time
Legal, Warranty & Returns (4)
The Smart Cup is covered by a one-year warranty from the date of delivery. This covers functional defects under normal use. For more details on what the warranty covers and excludes, see our full Warranty and Returns Policy.
Online orders: Unopened product boxes (both Fit-Check Kit and Smart Cup) can be returned within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. Refunds are processed within 14 days of us receiving your return.
Fit–Check Kit: If you try the Fit–Check Kit and find Emm isn’t the right fit, you can return the unopened Smart Cup box within 28 days for a refund. Returns must include the Fit–Check Kit cup and applicator, sealed in its bag inside the Fit–Check Kit box to receive a full refund.
Opened products: Because the Smart Cup is an intimate product, it cannot be returned once opened or if the tamper seal is broken, unless it is faulty.
For full details, see our full Warranty and Returns Policy.
If your Smart Cup or applicator develops a fault, please contact our customer service team. We may ask you to return the product or provide a video so we can inspect the issue. Faulty products will be replaced under warranty. Full details are included in the Warranty and Returns Policy.
Refunds are processed within 14 days of your pre-order cancellation being confirmed or your unopened product return being received.
Data Privacy (5)
We know your menstrual health data is some of the most personal information you share. That’s why we’ve built Emm with privacy and security at its core. We’ve also partnered with Onteigo, our specialist, independent data protection partners, to make sure we’re doing everything we can to handle your information responsibly.
Onteigo supports us by:
- Keeping our privacy practices up to date with UK and EU data protection law (including GDPR).
- Reviewing our policies and processes to make sure they meet the highest standards.
- Providing independent oversight and expert advice on how we protect your data.
This partnership means your privacy isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we actively invest in, with expert specialists by our side. Click here to view our full Data Privacy Policy.
Your personal and health data is private to you:
- We do not sell your data
- We do not share your health data for advertising
- We only share data with trusted providers who help us run the app securely (like cloud storage). They must follow our instructions and cannot use your data for anything else
Because this includes health data, GDPR gives it extra protection: we can only disclose it when it’s necessary, lawful, and transparent.
If you choose to allow it, we may use the data you generate through the Emm App and Emm Cup to support our research and innovation in menstrual and reproductive health. This includes:
- Cup sensor data (e.g. fluid volume, temperature, movement)
- Logged symptoms, cycle patterns, and contraceptive use
- App usage and interactions (e.g. which features you use most)
We only use this data in a pseudonymised or anonymised format — meaning it’s either stripped of identifiable details or grouped in a way that can’t be linked back to you. By letting us use your data in this way, you're helping to:
- Improve our understanding of menstrual and reproductive health
- Build smarter, more inclusive features within the Emm App and Cup
- Support wider research around female health to enable better outcomes
We use strong security measures designed in line with globally recognised GDPR and FDA cybersecurity guidelines to protect your data, including encryption, secure storage, and strict access controls. Our systems are also tested to meet UK PSTI requirements.
That said, no system in the world is completely risk-free. Sometimes breaches happen because of things like weak passwords, human error, or outdated software. We’ve built safeguards around these risks, including:
- Encrypting your data both in transit and at rest
- Training our team regularly on how to handle sensitive health data securely
- Keeping our systems patched, monitoring for threats, and using external experts to test our defences
- A clear incident response plan. If something does go wrong, we have a robust process in place to respond quickly, limit any impact, and keep you informed.
Because your menstrual health information is classed as special category data under GDPR, the law requires stronger protections and tighter limits on how it can be used or disclosed, which we apply throughout our systems and processes.
Yes, GDPR gives you strong rights over your data, and we make it simple for you to use them. You can request to:
- See what data we hold about you
- Update or correct your information
- Delete your account and data at any time
- Withdraw consent for research or other optional uses
We only keep your data while you actively use Emm. If you delete your account, we remove or anonymise your data unless we’re legally required to keep some for a short time (for example, for financial compliance).
If you’d like to know more about how we protect your data, or want to exercise your rights, you can contact us at privacy@emm.co. If you ever feel we haven’t handled your data properly, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority (like the ICO in the UK).
